One of the main reasons for Nissan's underwhelming performance in the Japanese GT Championship (JGTC) in the 1990s was the iron-block inline-6 engine used in the Skyline GT-R R34. Therefore, when production of the R34 ended in 2002, Nissan replaced the car's RB26DETT engine with the VQ30 engine. The VQ30 is an all-aluminum block V6 engine, which works with a propeller shaft to achieve optimal weight balance.

The new GT-R made its first racing appearance in a semi-finished state in May 2002. The following year, Nissan launched the 2003 GT-R, which added tubular structures to the chassis at the front and rear of the cockpit. This finished racing car had excellent handling performance, and it was even dubbed the "Cornering Machine".

Two Nismo GT-Rs and one Impul GT-R participated in the 2003 JGTC series. In the first race, the No. 23 Xanavi GT-R finished second, behind a Toyota Supra. In subsequent races, the No. 22 car driven by Kageyama Masami and Richard Lyons, and the No. 12 car driven by Benoit Treluyer and Yuji Ide, both claimed victories in the 4th and 8th races respectively.

Starting from the second race, the Motoyama-Krumm team in the No. 23 car consistently earned points. They did not secure any victories, but in JGTC events, teams with higher rankings face heavier weight penalties. Thus, these results were ideal—eventually, Motoyama and Krumm won the Drivers' Championship, and Nismo claimed the Manufacturers' Championship.
